And the World Baseball Classic has been a hit overseas, even as it has been greeted with indifference in this country.

 And as we ponder this evidence of the games popularity, it is difficult to believe that the cup of outrage is overflowing in the wake of Manny Ramirezs suspension.
At least among the general public. Sure, that outrage is overflowing in the newspapers and on the airwaves. But as fans continue to hand over their money to the billionaires who own baseball teams, maybe its time to put an end to the righteous indignation.
Lets face it.
The baseball-watching public simply doesnt care that much about players who cheat the game.
Perhaps they should.
Perhaps they should care deeply about performance-enhancing drugs, and the violation of rules, and the distortion of the word competition. But they Bob Gibson official jersey dont.

Severna Park High grad makes case to stay in big leagues
          Josh Banks is back in the big leagues, and he's on a mission.
 He's there to stay.
 "I got a chance to start," Banks said, "and hopefully, I'll keep going."

 Banks (1-0) allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings to help lead the Padres to a 4-3 victory over the Houston Astros last week during his first start this season. On Sunday, he yielded six Michael Cuddyer official jersey runs in 41/3 innings to the Dodgers in a no-decision. He started again late last night in San Francisco.
  If he can stay consistent, San Diego will have a tough decision when injured starters Jake Peavy and Chris Young return after the All-Star break.
 "Sometimes it's all about opportunities, and he's got to make the most of it now," said Severna Park coach Jim McCandless, who talks with Banks frequently and will fly out to San Diego in mid-July to watch him pitch. "His goal is to be there and succeed."
 Following a 17-appearance season, including a 3-6 record and 4.75 ERA over 851/3 innings, Banks was demoted to Portland on Aug. 27 to make room for reliever Cla Meredith.
 Banks spent the rest of the season in Triple-A and didn't make the team out of spring training. But when the Padres began to run short on arms, they recalled him, and Banks began producing immediately.
 Originally designated as a long reliever, Banks threw three innings of two-hit ball in a loss to Oakland on June 19. Six days later, he relieved Wade LeBlanc in the second and allowed two runs on five hits over 31/3 innings in a 9-3 loss to Seattle.
 The Padres' coaching staff approached Banks after that game and asked if he could start. He didn't hesitate.

 That's exactly his plan.

 Banks was then inserted into the starting rotation and threw his first complete game in his second career start - a 5-1 win against San Francisco - and started 14 games in 15 appearances before being demoted.
 "We were very surprised he got sent down at the end of the season last year," McCandless said. "But he's back now, and it's a testament to Josh. He's the hardest-working guy I've coached."
 Banks had plenty of help last season.
 As a 25-year-old former Toronto Bluey Jay, Banks kept to himself in the bullpen and dugout until Greg Maddux - a 355-game winner and Hall of Fame lock - offered him an open seat.  "He'd always ask me why I'd throw guys certain ways," Banks said. "He said, 'If you throw 95 percent of your pitches down and away, you'll win 15 games a year.' "
 Maddux would know better than most. Known for his control and intellect, Maddux collected four consecutive Cy Young Awards, 17 straight 15-win seasons between 1988 and 2004, boasted a 3.16 career ERA and won 18 Gold Gloves.
 Banks, who throws between 88-92 mph, developed a changeup and a split-finger fastball to complement his curveball knows better than to overthrow on the mound - thanks, again, to Maddux.

 Banks will certainly keep those words with him today when he faces Chad Billingsley and the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (51-29).
